Why Deer Need Vita-Mineral
When considering methods to improve antler growth in Whitetail deer, it is critical to understand the growth process of the antlers and the genetic material that they are comprised of. Deer are ruminants, meaning they are equipped with a four-chambered stomach. An interesting characteristic about the ruminant's stomach is that it allows the animal to gather a lot of food at once and then chew and digest it later. The four-chambered stomach is needed to process the large quantities of low nutrient food that deer eat.
The change in season is actually what triggers the process of antler growth in deer. It's a complicated process, but in short what happens is the change in daylight is sensed through the eyes which then sends that message to the pineal gland The Pineal gland produces different hormones, including the Luteinizing hormone that regulates the amount of testosterone produced in the testes. This sensing of light changes begins the process of releasing the hormones, nutrients and minerals needed for antler growth. Antlers begin growing slowing at first, but by mid-summer they begin generating more rapidly. As the autumn season approaches, the deer begin a sudden increase and release of testosterone. The velvet then starts to dry up and fall off and the antlers begin to harden. Deer are able to breed from the time the velvet falls off until the antlers are shed.
Deer antlers are live tissue comprised of bone, and maintain a constant blood and nerve supply while growing. Deer antlers are the fastest growing tissue in all of the animal kingdom, averaging about 1 to 2 inches a week during development. When antlers initially begin to grow, they are mostly comprised of protein. As they start to harden they become about half protein and half minerals/vitamins. We already know that deer need protein in order to produce huge antlers. What is also important is the presence of minerals and vitamins. The main two minerals needed to help antler growth are Calcium and phosphorous. There are many other minerals present that are also needed, but in much smaller quantities such as magnesium, sodium, potassium, barium, iron, aluminum, zinc, and manganese. It is clear that these minerals are very important to antler development but to what extent it is not completely known. All of these minerals are present in hardened antlers.
